Lemon juice with a cup of coffee is gaining popularity as a weight-loss cure. All you have to do is sip the liquid and watch those extra pounds melt away! Millions of people have seen videos of the dieting treatment. Where it causes quite a commotion on social media. and not only because of the caffeine in the cup.

So, is adding lemon to coffee the key to losing weight? Let’s read through what registered dietitian Beth Czerwony, RD has said. 

What exactly is lemon coffee?

This drink’s basic description is a coffee with lemon. One of the most popular combinations appears to be half a lemon juice poured into a regular cup of black coffee. The flavor isn’t particularly tasty nor good, which may explain why a hot cup of “lemon coffee” isn’t displayed on menu cards at local cafés.

Are the promises about weight loss true?

The answer is simple: NO. Lemons do not have particular fat-burning properties, according to Czerwony. The fruit’s pucker-inducing juice will not help you fit into a smaller pair of trousers. “That mechanism of action is just not there,” Czerwony explains. “There is nothing in lemon juice that will burn fat or build a chemical link to do so.” It’s not that simple, I’m afraid.” 

But how did this weight-loss tip using lemon in coffee come about? 

It’s probably because of similar lemon-in-water claims. Drinking a glass of water with a lemon slice is frequently mentioned as an excellent strategy to lose weight. But it’s not because lemons have any mystical characteristics. It’s more of a result of water filling your stomach without consuming any calories.

“The water keeps you fuller, which helps to suppress hunger cues that make you want to eat,” Czerwony adds. Coffee has a similar appetite-suppressing effect while simultaneously speeding up your metabolism with a caffeine rush. According to Czerwony, good eating plans aren’t designed around guzzling coffee — with or without lemon.

Is there any advantage to adding lemon to coffee?

Lemons offer several beneficial nutritional properties. Lemons, like many citrus fruits, are a good source of vitamin C. Lemons’ citric acid may also aid digestion and reduce the chance of kidney stones. In addition, lemons have a distinct flavor. “Lemons are a perfectly excellent fruit,” Czerwony says. “They’re just not magical when it comes to losing weight.”

The dangers of putting lemon in coffee

Lemon juice can induce heartburn due to its high citric acid content, especially if you have a history of acid reflux. That acid may be tough on dental enamel with enough time and volume.

Is a Lemon coffee drink worth trying?

According to Czerwony, people are always seeking that “one thing” that will make a difference when it comes to the number on the scale. For a brief while, chia seeds drew my attention. The same goes for apple cider vinegar and grapefruit.

“I see why these fad diets become popular,” Czerwony adds. “They’re made from natural ingredients found in our kitchens and have certain health advantages.” They appear to be feasible.

“However, if these things were tried and true, everyone would have done them for a long time and succeeded.” When it comes to losing weight, there are no fast cures.”

What about putting lemon into coffee to slim down? “I wouldn’t endorse that,” Czerwony says. “So, unless you enjoy the flavor for some reason, I’d avoid the TikTok craze.”
